Legend of Dajia Mazu on her miracles

Mazu Exhibited Power to Rescue the Prince

It is said that in Autumn of 50th year of Chien Lung, Ching Dynasty, When Chia Ching (嘉慶) was a prince, he visited Taiwan in disguise. At night when he and his retinue took the ship passing the sea on the west side of Da Jia, suddenly came a rainstorm. Huge waves emerged into the sky. It was too dark to see you five fingers in front of you. They lost directions. Prince Chia Ching was extremely freighted in the cabin. Immediately he prayed the Heaven for help. Before long they found a light far away. The ship followed the light to sail. Soon they escaped from danger. The ship entered the seaport safely.

Prince Chia Ching in panic went ashore anxiously. Raising head, he found that the guider was a lantern with 3 characters “Chen Nan Palace”. He asked the local people, and began to know it was the local famous Mazu temple. He could survive from the fury sea because of Mazu’s protection. Therefore, Prince Chia Ching conferred “Seashore House” seaport with a new name “Ta An Seaport” (The literal meaning is Seaport of extreme safety). Then, he led his retinue to worship Chen Nan Palace, and express profound gratitude to Mazu.

After his return, he reported the detail to Emperor Chian Lung (乾隆皇帝). The emperor was very grateful for Mazu who saved the prince, and bestowed a horizontal wooden table with “Powerful Protector (佑濟昭靈)” written by the emperor himself. This tablet is still hung in the main hall of Chen Nan Palace.

Rain Mazu and Water-Crossed Mazu

Dajia Mazu is regarded as “Rain Mazu” or “Water-crossed Mazu” by south Taiwan people because her pilgrimage always brings spring rain and timely rain for the cities and the villages on her way to the destination. The working members of the pilgrim group often get wet in the rain, but they don’t care. They all think that Mazu prepares a good rain for the people. It rains on the pilgrimage, but the big burning incense plugged in the leading flag has never been wetted and distinguished. Besides, over the past 100 years it has never rained in her grand birthday celebration.

Thus, it is very clear that Mazu is very powerful!

Save Military Workers in South Ocean (Malay Archipelago)

During the period of World War II the young men in Da Jia area were drafted (by Japan) to Malay Archipelago as military workers. Before they left home, they came to Chen Nan Palace to beg for an Incense Fire bag for safety blessing.

It is said that several military workers taking a siesta heard that Mazu cried out “Bomb falls!”. They ran away immediately. In a few seconds, the US bombers bombed the place where they just slept. After Taiwan was restored, those military workers returned home. Every year they followed Mazu’s sedan chair to go on pilgrimage in order to repay Mazu for saving their lives.
